Uploading a book to Amazon KDP can feel like launching a rocket. You press a button, hold your breath, and hope nothing explodes (or in this case, gets rejected by the automated review bot).
Before you even think about logging into your KDP dashboard, run your manuscript through this 5-point checklist.
1. The "Mirror Margins" Rule
This is the #1 reason for rejection. Standard Word documents have "Left" and "Right" margins. But books have "Inside" and "Outside" margins. You must set Mirrored Margins so text doesn't disappear into the binding.
2. Page Number Alignment
- They shouldn't appear on the Title Page.
- They shouldn't appear on blank pages.
- They usually shouldn't start until Chapter 1.
3. Font Embedding Verification
When you save your PDF, you must embed the fonts. Otherwise, KDP might replace your beautiful font with a generic one.
4. Image Resolution (300 DPI)
Check your image properties. You are looking for 300 DPI (dots per inch).
5. The Final PDF Export
Never upload a Word document (.doc or .docx) for a paperback. Always export to a high-quality PDF.
