There is a specific kind of panic that sets in when you hit "Publish" on Amazon, pop the champagne, and then... ding! You get an email from the KDP Setup Team.
Subject: "ATTENTION REQUIRED: Review your file."
Your heart sinks. Did you break the law? Is your book terrible? No! You just tripped over a robot. KDP's automated check system is extremely strict, but it's also very predictable. Let's fix the three most common errors so you can get that book live.
Error #1: "Insufficient Gutter" Explained
What it means in plain English: Your words are too close to the spine. If they printed it, readers would have to rip the book open to read the text.
The Fix: You need to increase your "Inside Margin."
- Open your document.
- Go to Page Setup / Margins.
- Add at least 0.125" to whatever your inside margin currently is.
- Export to PDF and re-upload.
Error #2: "Fonts Not Embedded" Error Fix
What it means: You used a cool font on your laptop. Amazon's printer computers don't have that font installed. So, they have no idea how to print it.
The Fix: You must "embed" the font information inside the PDF file itself. In Microsoft Word: Go to File > Options > Save. Look for a checkbox that says "Embed fonts in the file." Check it. Save as PDF.
Error #3: "Images are less than 300 DPI"
What it means: Your images look fine on a screen (which only needs 72 dots per inch), but they will look pixelated and fuzzy on paper (which needs 300 dots per inch).
The Fix: You usually need to find a higher-quality source image. Don't just drag-and-drop images from Google Images—they are almost always too small for print!
